Harlequin Shrimp

SKU: AO3202Categories: Invertebrates, Shrimp

The Harlequin Shrimp, scientifically described in 1852, has a white body with large light blue spots, with males being slightly smaller than females. It can be distinguished from its close cousin, the Hawaiian H. picta, which has purple and red spots. Despite having large claws (chelipeds), the Harlequin Shrimp does not use them for hunting. For optimal care, it is recommended to keep the Harlequin Shrimp in mated pairs in a moderate-light aquarium. This species is intolerant of copper or high nitrates, and maintaining proper iodine levels in the water is essential for successful molting. The Harlequin Shrimp is a selective eater and feeds exclusively on echinoderms, primarily starfish, and a few species of urchins. When feeding on starfish, the Harlequin Shrimp typically starts at the tip of the arm and works its way to the central disc, which can mortally wound the starfish. To provide adequate nourishment, it is essential to supply the Harlequin Shrimp with starfish. They are the ultimate solution for Astrina starfish infestations.
