Niger Trigger Large
The Redtooth Trigger, commonly referred to as the Niger Trigger, is a visually stunning fish that makes a wonderful addition to a home aquarium. The exact color of this species varies, and can change between shades of purple, blue, and blue-green on a day-to-day basis. The fins and long tail lobes are typically adorned with a striking lighter blue highlight. The color temperature of the lighting in the aquarium can also influence the coloration of the Niger Triggerfish. As an adult, they develop bright red teeth and are usually dark purple with a blue-green highlight around their face, making them fascinating to observe during feeding time. To accommodate a Niger Triggerfish, a 180-gallon or larger aquarium with rocks and caves for hiding is necessary as they may rearrange the landscaping and rocks. This species also vocalizes through a distinctive “grunting” sound. They are a great active fish for a more aggressive, fish-only display. A varied diet of meaty foods is essential for the Niger Triggerfish, including squid, krill, clams, small fish, and hard-shelled shrimp. This helps to wear down their ever-growing teeth.
