Orange Halloween Hermit Crab

The Halloween Hermit Crab is a standout member of any aquarium’s cleanup crew with its vibrant orange and red banding. This beautiful creature originates from the Hawaiian Islands and adds an attractive color variegation to marine aquariums. Apart from its aesthetic value, the Halloween Hermit Crab serves as an excellent aquarium cleaner by consuming leftover food that settles on the substrate. It also helps maintain a healthy environment by efficiently eating algae like green hair algae and cyanobacteria while aerating the aquarium substrate by sifting through the sand. However, it’s essential to note that the Halloween Hermit Crab can disrupt rockwork or corals in reef aquariums as it grows larger. Moreover, it lives in abandoned snail or triton shells and may attack and eat a snail to claim the shell for its home. To avoid this, it’s best to provide the Halloween Hermit Crab with empty shells of various sizes and shapes. In case there’s insufficient algae in the aquarium, the Halloween Hermit Crab should be fed dried seaweed and meaty items like mysis shrimp.
