Tiger Cucumber

SKU: AO6165Categories: Cucumber, Invertebrates

The Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber is a unique detritus eater found in nature. Its body is brown with white spots and covered in spiny papillae, making it a visually stunning addition to any aquarium. This sea cucumber is an excellent scavenger and can clean hard-to-reach corners and areas under rockwork. In the wild, the Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber can grow up to six feet long, but in aquariums, they typically reach a length of 12-18 inches. It is recommended to keep only three inches of worm for every 20 gallons of water in the aquarium. To ensure the best care for this species, it should be kept in larger aquariums with thick sand beds and rocky caves for shelter. The natural diet of the Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber includes diatoms, microalgae, bacteria, meaty foods, and other detritus. Interestingly, this species attaches its lower body to the inside of its shelter and only extends its anterior half when searching for food. It is important to note that Sea Cucumbers, including Holothuria sp., have the potential to poison an aquarium, but this is rare unless they are accidentally sucked into an uncovered pump intake or overflow box. Proper acclimation and housing with appropriate inhabitants are also essential, and the drip-acclimation method is recommended to minimize exposure to fluctuating water parameters. Additionally, the Sea Cucumber cannot tolerate high nitrate levels or copper-based medications. Due to seasonal availability, orders may be filled with either Holothuria hilla or Holothuria impatiens, with the former having a gray to chestnut-brown body and the latter having a knobier appearance and being more pale in color.
